Over the course of the last few decades, the role of police in American life has undergone a sea change. One notable aspect of that change has been the increased militarization of local law enforcement agencies. The map to the left shows the per capita amount of military surplus equipment sent to each county in the US in recent years.
I am currently working on research into the consequences of modern policing, especially as they implicate racial cleavages in American cities. These papers include studies of the effects of police militarization on crime, racial disparities in the use of force, and the effects of the use of force on citizen behavior. I will post results and working papers here as they become available.
